Hi. I work for a health video website called icyou.com which has thousands of health-related videos on all sorts of topics. Here’s a video we created that specifically talks about the glycemic index and why you should keep this in mind when adopting a healthier lifestyle. She also gives examples of foods with low glycemic indexes and foods with high indexes. Here is the link:
I have a huge appetite (part of my culture is big portion sizes) and gain all my weight in the stomach. Therefore I REALLY rely on filling foods and strategy in my diet. The glycemic index seems to work for me (keeping insulin low, etc.) but any other suggestions? 5’6” female with 35 inch waist (BAD) and weigh 140 lbs.
Thanks a lot!
First off, your weight IS IN THE ACCEPTABLE RANGE for your height. Your good weight range is 120-140. A 35″ waist on a girl 5′ 6″ is NOT bad, it’s normal. Especially if you are under 18, since your body isn’t done with internal changes until that age at least.
That said, if big appetite is a problem for you, learn about the 6 tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent). If you have a bite or two of each of the six tastes at each meal, (or at least every day), you will be amazed at how your appetite decreases. We think we’re hungry, but we’re really craving balance of taste and nutrition in our diets. The link below has more information.
Secondly, I have found that big appetite is often a sign of not getting enough protein. Try eating more fish, chicken breast and lean cuts of beef and pork.
Big servings are fine as long as they are of fruits, and vegetables cooked without too much fat.
The book that really helped you the most to change your eating habits, live a healthier life, and lose weight permanently?
I am considering trying the GI (glycemic index) diet. It seems pretty healthy, and was originally developed to help diabetics regulate their blood sugar levels. I am not diabetic, but have turned into one of those “apple” shaped women who are at risk for the disease.
I have been a yo-yo dieter for years. The most successful diet, for me, was the Atkin’s Diet. In thirteen months, I lost about 75 pounds, wearing the same size clothes I did in high school. The best thing about Atkin’s was that, after only a few days, all the cravings I had lived with so long completely disappeared! That was a huge deal for me. I fell off the wagon while on a week-long cruise, gaining an incredible 10 pounds in less than a week, and it was downhill from there… Later, I had to have a liver biopsy, and I think the “spot” may have been from all that fat.
I think is the G.I. Diet because I think eating by the Glycemic Index is just HEALTHY way to eat and its a program you can live on forever. Your never hungry and you can eat a lot of food. I also think that WEIGHT WATCHER’S is also good. The problem with most “DIETS” is that there is no way to maintain your weight loss. Everyone is real good about telling you how to LOSE the weight but not bothering to tell you How to keep the weight OFF.
The fact is that 98% of ALL weight loss over 25 lbs comes back plus more. These people fail because they didn’t change their eating patterns…..they just dieted. Unless you find a way to eat for Life….you will not keep the wight off. Only 2% keep it off for life. I lost almost 200 lbs(by myself) and have kept it off for 25 years, but keeping thr weight off is so much harder than the initial weight loss…its very easy to slide back into bad eating. I love the GI program & Weight Watchers because you won’t suffer, feel deprived and you can keep your weight off.
I was diagnosed with PCOS about a year ago. I was placed on a metformin therapy of 1500mg a day to help lose some weight and control my insulin resistance. Luckily, I have a fast metabolism and workout regularly so I was not too terribly overweight. Over the course of the year I worked out more(more weights, spin class, boot camps, etc), ate less and did my best to follow the low glycemic index to prevent spikes in my insulin (1g of protein for every 3g of carb that I consume). Recently, I visited a dietician whom placed me on a strict 1200 calorie diet. I have been on this diet for about a month and have yet to lose a pound. She was very impressed that I was able to maintain my weight over the last year without gaining anymore weight. I, however, am incredibly frustrated with the fact that I cant, and have not, lost a single pound in the course of the year. Im happy that I have not gained anymore weight, but geez, what else can I possibly do get my weight down. I am 5’2 and have been 140lbs for the last year. All I would like to lose is 10 pounds. If anyone can offer advice, I would truly appreciate it.
Have you consulted with a naturopathic doctor about weight loss? Possibly try the HCG Diet developed by an Italian doctor in the 1950′s burns pounds and fat. Sometimes you’re not giving your body enough of what it needs to be able to lose weight, but rather not enough so it thinks it’s in starvation mode.
I am trying to figure out the differences between the 2 so I can make a decision as to which one to go with. I need to work on portion control and I like the “glycemic index” factor that NutriSystem advertises. I got the impression also that NutriSystem has almost double the amount of food selections that Jenny Craig has. Is one more expensive than the other? What happens if you go on vacation – do you pack the food with you to eat on your trip or skip it during your vacation? What happens once you’ve lost the weight – continue with them or do you learn how to eat well on your own once you’ve met your goals? Please help me decide. Thanks.
This might be a little long to explain it all, sorry ahead of time.
Recently I decided to go to a Doctor’s Weight Loss Clinic. I had gained over 60 pounds in one year for no reason, and it was impossible to lose the weight and keep it off despite healthy diet and daily exercise routine. The weight doctor seemed to think I had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and said I needed to be tested by a gyno. Thankfully the diet is working. I lost 15 pounds in one month. Unfortunately these results have come with odd problems that can’t seem to be explained.
Not even a week after starting the diet I began a very painful and random period even though I’m on the pill. A few days later after I started my period, I ended up having a cyst that ruptured. Finally I healed and my period ended from that, but exactly a week later I started another period. That period has ended, but seems to have caused more issues. I don’t know if I have another cyst or not, but I’m back to having constant abdominal pain. All through this my hormones have gone nuts. It has caused me to get severe acne, and making things things extremely sensitive to say the least.
I went to the gyno and she basically blew me off. She said it had nothing to do with the diet, the cyst came from me skipping a pill or taking it at the wrong time (I’ve been on birth control for 12 years now, I don’t ever forget to take the pill, and I take it at the same time every night), and that things will just be odd for a month. She also refused to test me for PCOS stating that if I had it, she would just put me on birth control and since I’m already on it, it doesn’t matter. Despite me being in pain, and having some of the same symptoms all over again, she didn’t check to see if I even had another cyst. Furthermore she prescribed another birth control pill similar to what I was on that has low estrogen and progestin, which means it won’t be effective in shrinking or preventing more cysts.
I then talked to the weight doctor, and he had never heard of such problems. I am currently on a low glycemic index impact diet, which is suppose to help PCOS if I have it. Earlier this year I had started a similar diet and started a random period then too, but didn’t stay on the diet. This leads me to believe it’s the diet, and not any of the medications he has put me on. Also, none of the meds have been known to cause these side effects. I have never had a cyst before that I knew about, and certainly didn’t cause these kind of problems. He seemed to be clueless about if PCOS could have caused this. I have another gyno appointment Monday, but I’m looking to see if anyone has experienced similar problems. Has anyone heard of a diet low in sugar throwing off hormones that bad and that fast? I’m desperate, and am in so much pain all the time.
Here is what the weight doctor prescribed:
-low impact glycemic index diet.
-Phentermine 37.5mg
-Once a week fat burning shots that include B 12, B complex, and Lipovite
interesting, i have the same problem make sure its not endometriosis( tissue or fiber around ur uterus and ovaries) someone similliar to pcos. This may also be something your having..if ur gaining weight around your tummy! i know it hard but try to look into it..do your own research and understand how your body is and what will make it better? Good luck!
I’ve heard a lot of claims about the glycemic index. So here’s my question: If, keeping total calories the same, and total calories from carbs the same(along with the same general activity), if I switch to eating carbs that are lower on the glycemic index, will I lose body fat that I otherwise could not, or does it all really come down to total calories? Specifically, I’m looking for a loss in percentage of body fat vs. overall weight(although I realize that will come down too).
Thank you for your time.
I’ve been started on Metformin and BCP since July. I have been following a low-glycemic index diet as best I can (whole grain toast, salads with oil and vinegar, baked chicken, veggies, fruit, etc). I would be lying if I said I never ate higher gi foods, but I’ve made a huge shift in my diet. I haven’t been exercising as much as I should, the medication makes me SO tired. I do walk the dog and have a fairly physical job. I am wondering, though, why I haven’t lost ANY weight at all! I would have thought that will all this medication and eating hardly anything I actually like, I would have seen at least a small loss. Has anyone else had this problem?
I need to lose no more than 10 pounds, but nothing has worked so I’m looking for a structured diet that will just tell me what to eat for a couple of weeks and lose the weight…I’m thinking about joining ediets.com but I have to choose a diet and I don’t know which one is best for me…The ediets weight loss plan is their option #1, and it seems ok…also, the glycemic index diet seems good for me because i looove sugar and I know that part of my weight is because of all that ice cream ive eaten in my life! one problem is that i just eat these vegetables: lettuce, broccoli and coleslaw, the other ones make me nauseous…i eat a lot of fruits, i like nonfat dairy and whole grains, so…i’m on the right track but I need to change my diet because its not working…so please i’d appreciate any suggestions about diets or any experience with these diets..
